· Do you feel there is something wrong when your trusted family doctor is paid to promote a medication?

· How about all those television commercials on Viagra or other drugs? Do you think the American consumer should be educated on medications?

· When you go to the doctor, do you tell the doctor what brand of antibiotic you should take?

· How about medications like Vioxx® and Celebrex® that were taken off the market after several people allegedly died from taking them? Do you think officials at the FDA approved these anti-inflammatory (pain) medications too soon? Do you think Pharmaceutical representatives should take government officials and medical people out for “information” luncheons?

· Before you “rush” to judgment; you should realize that America has one of the most advance medical care system in the world. People from around the globe flock to the US to receive the most advance medications and surgical procedures.

Discuss this ethical problem with your classmates. Use at least one (reputable, do not use Wikipedia) scientific source (list websites).

Note: there is no need to repeat the above questions in your responses.

How to Respond to a Discussion Question
The Discussion Questions in the course have a “Required Post” which means that you have to make your first post before you can see those made by others. So each discussion forum will appear empty when you start. This requires that you read and learn from the text and other sources to prepare for the first posting, and then allows you to share information and interact with the rest of the class. **Note: Do not wait until the end of the module to post your Required Post. Your original post must be submitted 24 hours before the close of the module in order to receive full credit. If submitted less than 24 hours before the close of the module, it will receive only half credit!

For the Required Post discussion click the “Create Thread” button on your first post. After that post, choose the “Tree View” in the upper right corner above the Forum Name and choose “Expand All” on the right side of the grey bar below the Forum Name so you can see all of the other students posts. You can post again at the top level with another “Create Thread” post or you can reply to other users. To reply to other users click on the name of their post to open and read it and then under their post choose “Reply.” Change the Subject Line so it is more meaningful than just “Re: [their post subject]” – create your own subject line summarizing your thoughts e.g. “Statistics show that there is a correlation between ….” Type your message in the message box and hit “Submit”, then go to the bottom of the screen on the right side hit “OK.”

Not all Modules will have a discussion question. All discussion responses must be submitted online. Please, do not email them to me.

Purpose of Discussion Questions:
Discussion questions are designed to allow class communication in the class. If your answers are incomplete, or grammar and sentence structure mistakes make reading your responses difficult, points will be deducted. Discussion Questions will be scattered throughout several modules.

**Note: Do not wait until the end of the module to post your discussion questions. Your original post must be submitted 24 hours before the close of the module in order to receive full credit. If submitted less than 24 hours before the close of the module, it will receive only half credit!

Your original post must be submitted before you are allowed to respond to your three classmates.

For each Discussion Question you are required to:
1. Respond to the original question by writing a minimum of 400 words about the subject (40 points).
2. Included within your response you should list at least one reputable website about the topic (Wikipedia may not be used as your primary website). DO NOT copy and paste information from websites into your response (see #4 below).
3. You must communicate with THREE of your classmates about the discussion question (20 points each response). Your response to your classmates must include their first name and be meaningful. They should continue the discussion and be 3 – 4 sentences in length, minimum (75 – 100 words).

If you are unsure if your posts are adequate, look at some of the others written by your classmates. I think you can tell a good original post and response when you see it.

4) Another issue is proper referencing. If you are using a direct quote in your post, it must be in quotation marks and the source identified. I have no objection to one or two sentences being taken directly, but the majority of the discussion should be in your own words. Do not copy and paste whole sections. If I suspect that a student has copied material without referencing it, they will receive a zero for that post. You must respond by the end date of the module posted in the Course Schedule.

For each response to your classmates:

Use the first name of your classmate you are responding to.
For example: “Hello Mary, I read the article you recommended and I think the author made an interesting point, but I must disagree with her interpretation of…”

Once you submit a post (either for discussions or in the Conversation area), you may have to refresh the page and wait a second or so before you will be able to see your post. Don’t panic if you don’t see your post immediately, you may just have to refresh the page. However, I recommend that you ALWAYS save your posts on your hardrive or a flash drive before you submit them – ALWAYS.
