Your goal is to analyze, critique, and evaluate the speech of a speech delivered outside of class.
Assignment Instructions:
For this paper, you will select a TedTalk from The selected talk must:
1. Be over twelve minutes in length.
2. Not be animated.
As you listen to the speaker, you should take notes in relation to the questions provided on the Outside Speaker Analysis Worksheet attached to this assignment description.
After reviewing your notes, you must position yourself as a critical observer of public speaking and then analyze, critique, and evaluate the effectiveness of the communication that occurs in the speech. You must use specific examples from the speech and incorporate direct quotes from the speech to support your points. You must also use three outside sources (excluding our textbook) to support your points.
Assignment Requirements:
Your papers must be:
• Formatted with 1” margins and double-spaced
• 12pt font, Times New Roman only
• Approximately 3 to 7 pages in length – most 3 page papers will be insufficient and you should aim higher.

Briefly identify the speaker, speech title, and speech context (audience, etc.). End with a thesis statement – a summary of the argument you will be making in the paper.
2. The Speech:
Briefly describe the speech situation. Who was the speaker? Why are they qualified to speak on the topic? What was the topic? Who was the audience? Where and when was the speech presented? What genre of speech was given?
3. Content and Organization:
Summarize and describe the speech’s content and organization. Identify the main points of the speech and the organizational pattern followed. Describe the introduction and conclusion for the speech. What did the speaker talk about? Was the thesis sentence evident? What was the purpose of the speech? Make sure to assess and evaluate the speaker’s content and organization. For example, was the organization of the speech well done? Why/why not?
4. Development of Speech Content:
Summarize and describe the speech’s use of evidence and appeals. Identify and analyze some of the types of evidence used to support the speaker’s points. Was the reasoning sound? How effectively did the speaker support her or his position? What did the speaker do to gain and hold attention? Did the speaker use any identifiable information and persuasive strategies? Make sure to assess and evaluate the speaker’s use of evidence and appeals. For example, was the use of evidence effective? Did it contribute to the speech? Why/why not?
5. Delivery and Platform Behavior:
Summarize and describe the speaker’s delivery and platform behavior. Make sure to include details of the speaker’s personal appearance, gestures, vocal characteristics, eye contact, and body movement. How effective was the speaker’s use of vocal and physical delivery? Was the overall impression one of confidence and credibility? Was the audience responsive to the speaker? Make sure to assess and evaluate the speaker’s delivery. For example, was the delivery effective or ineffective? Why/why not?
6. Language:
Summarize and describe the speaker’s use of language. Make sure to include details of the speaker’s word choice, clarity, vividness, appropriateness, and language devices. 7. Overall Evaluation/Conclusion:
