Anne Moody

Anne Moody Paper Guidelines/TipsQuestion: What are the different ideologies for black liberation that emerge in Moody’s memoir? Take note of Moody’s own ideas, as well as those of other African Americans discussed in her memoir. Put those ideas in conversation with the ideologies of DuBois, Washington, Wells, and Brown that we read earlier in the semester. For each of those four leaders, identify at least one passage from Moody that represents that leader’s ideas. Whose ideas predominate? How would you describe the relationship between strategies of protest and those of accommodation?Hints: Remind yourself from earlier in the semester what the four leaders of the Jim Crow era (DuBois, Washington, Wells, and Brown) said about how to fight oppression. Those documents are found in files on Canvas, if you need to refer back to them. Then think about where you see those strategies in Moody’s book? Where do you see DuBois’s ideas about direct protest (using the ballot, as well as directly protesting injustice)? Where do you see Washington’s tendencies towards accommodation (building up the black community with both self-help strategies and appeals for white support, rather than directly challenging Jim Crow)? What about Wells’s emphasis on self-help (economic boycotts, armed self-defense) and/or her interest in exposing white hypocrisy (for example, the prevalence of white assaults on black women despite the widespread characterization of black men as sexual predators)? What about Brown’s interest in appealing to the white community for support and loyalty? Example:Moody suggests that Booker T. Washington’s strategies of accommodation could be found most often among middle-class professionals in the black community. For example, she noted during her time in the Delta as a SNCC organizer that “the ministers started asking us not to come because we scared their congregations away” (Moody, p. 276). Organization:This paper should be around six paragraphs:
1) An introduction should lay out main argument that explains what strategies tended to prevail among Moody and her family and broader community. Some questions to consider as you formulate an argument: Which strategies were most commonly found? Did the prevailing strategies change over time? That is, did certain strategies become more prevalent over time? 2-5) Aim for at least one paragraph for each of the four leaders that matches their ideas with examples from Moody’s text.6) Conclude with a paragraph that answers the “so what?” question. There’s no single right way to conclude but don’t just restate your introduction. Some questions for consideration: Instead, think about what did you learn about the civil rights movement and/or the nature of social protest from this memoir? What connections across time periods did you make by putting Moody in dialogue with earlier leaders? Do you draw any connections with contemporary movements or social protest challenges?Sources and Citations:Anne Moody’s memoir is your main source for this paper. You do not need to quote/cite from the other documents, but you may if you wish. Parenthetical citations are fine. Length: 1,500 words (apx five pages)
