This week, if you’ve been following the old semester schedule (which I am still trying to follow pretty closely), you know we were scheduled to watch the Freedom Writers film in class, framed by some light critical discussion. While we can’t watch the film together, we can still watch the film because PCC’s library was able to secure a license to the film that we can all watch from home!
For this discussion, I’ve toned down the requirements quite a bit. There is no peer response requirement. All I want you to do is to respond to both of the questions below. If you’d like to respond to a peer, I encourage you to do so, but you don’t have to.
What are the essential qualities of a majoritarian story? How do we know when we are hearing a majoritarian story?

Explain why you believe your chosen element is fundamentally majoritarian in nature. Now, identify one element (scene, line, casting decision, etc.) from Freedom Writers that you feel supports a counter-narrative. Explain why you believe your chosen element is primarily an example of counter-storytelling. Finally, how do you reconcile these competing elements within the film?
