This assessment item requires students to respond to a series of short-answer questions based on core concepts from the course and a law reform case study.

Students will be provided with an example of legislative change, and they will be required to respond to a series of short-answer questions. The questions will test core knowledge of law and government in Australia and the impact of the proposed law on key rights and concepts such as justice and the rule of law.

Part A contains questions on core concepts of federalism, liberalism and democracy.

Part B contains a series of questions relating to laws recently enacted by the federal Parliament. I

In Trimester 3 2020, the laws to be studied will be the Telecommunications and Other Legislation Amendment (Assistance and Access) Act 2018 (Cth), which responded to the threat of terrorist groups using encryption apps like Whatsapp, Telegram and Signal.

More details on these laws is available in the attached assignment.

Your answers should be based on a combination of your knowledge from the course and textbook as well as your own research. We expect to see evidence of your own research in the answers through referencing (APA7 format). The word limit for this assignment is 2500 words, excluding the reference list.

This item will be assessed on the following basis:

1. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant government processes and institutions

2. Quality of research and critical analysis

3. Appropriateness of writing style and referencing skills

APA Referencing Resources:

The referencing system to use for this assignment is the most recent version of the APA format – APA7. Here is a link to the Griffith University Referencing Guide where this system is explained, with examples:

https://www.griffith.edu.au/library/study/referencing

It is important that you attempt to master this skill early on as it will take you a long way through University – practice makes perfect!

On referencing, good sources are textbook and peer reviewed journal articles and less desirable sources are the internet and websites. Where you have taken an idea (from something you have read) to explain something, you should provide a reference. You should practise applying referencing in all your assignments at University henceforth. Direct quotes always require a page reference, and should not be used to demonstrate your understanding unless absolutely necessary to the argument. Cut and paste from the website is also a no-go (and you will be cited for academic integrity). Good examples on how you should reference can be found in peer-reviewed journal articles.
