ASSIGNMENT #2: ESSAY ON FUTURE CAREER/JOB/WORK. How do your personal career plans relate to the future of the world and society? We are individuals in a big world. Your destiny is tied to planetary changes. Write a 1.5 page single-spaced personal statement that tells me how your dream career relates to global developments. Whether you want to be a businessperson, doctor, lawyer, artist, nurse, or something else—nothing you do is entirely in your hands. Think about labor markets (service work), changing demographics (more women), new policies (work visas), expanding ideas (virtual remote work), emerging paradigms in your work and/ or academic field (online banking). Try to cite readings from previous weeks.
Some questions to think about: will you be able to afford graduate school (JD/MA/PhD)? Can you afford to pay off student loan debt? Can your job be done by others in another country? If you want children, can you afford college tuition, daycare, and work at the same time? You must cite at least 2 sources from previous week. Tell me what you think will happen to you but sound informed about your prospects. Will Covid-19 have any impact on your profession, which might require travel or an advanced degree/skill? Will you be discriminated against in your job or career? Connect the local to the global, the personal to the professional…your present-day dreams to future realities.
Students always ask me if they can use other outside sources as a way sometimes to avoid reading for the class or using other/older class materials. You can use outside sources (sparingly), BUT you must show you are engaged with this class. You are getting a grade for THIS class, so show me you did the reading for it.
Writing-Specific Reading: Part 2 (“Preparing to Write”) of the required text “Writing in College.” Writing strategies described in the reading discussed in preparation for Assignment 2.
