Book review Tips from instructor:

Tips on Reviewing a History Book This is not just summarizing the book (which you should not do). It requires you to read the book critically and evaluate its overall argument or thesis. Do not retell the story. There is a good chance your teacher has read the book; you do not need to retell it. You will need to explain enough about the book, so the reader knows what you are talking about, but do not simply rehash the book. Find out what the author’s point is—what is his or her argument in the book—and evaluate that. You can usually find the argument in the introduction, where an author explains the purpose of the book. Four paragraphs. You can thoroughly evaluate a book in four paragraphs— –the first introductory paragraph (see section) that sets your essay in motion; –a paragraph briefly explaining the author’s thesis, and suggesting its importance in the field; –a paragraph that evaluates the sources or methodology; — a paragraph giving an overall evaluation of the book. A final closing paragraph of two sentences, giving either a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, is optional. If your assignment requires you to write more, use this formula but expand paragraphs two, three, or four, using more citations from the book. This will keep you focused, and also demonstrate to your teacher that you have read the book. Explain what is original about the book. What contribution does the book make to our understanding of history? Not only your understanding, (i.e., “This is the first book I’ve ever read about World War 2,”) but the overall study of the field (that is, look at other books on the same topic). Do not criticize the author for not writing the kind of book you would like to write. If you want to write a book on this topic, do so, but don’t chastise others for not doing your work. Do not criticize the author for not sharing your point of view. It may be that the author has a different point of view from yours—if this is relevant, mention it, and mention how the author’s book might have been strengthened by taking different ideas into account. Evaluate the book’s sources. What sources does the author use? How have the sources directed the author’s conclusions?
