Module 5: Building Capacity II: Promoting Growth and Development while Motivating & Increasing Morale
What motivates you to want to go to work and be productive? Is it a pat on the back for a job well done? Maybe it is being promoted after you’ve worked so hard on a project. Sometimes it is simply knowing you make a difference in the life of someone else. Motivation and morale can be influenced in different ways for different people. In this module, we will examine the effects of workplace culture on retention, motivation, and morale. Good employees are always in high demand. This module will look at how we can make sure our good employees stay with our organization.
Related to motivation and morale, we will examine influencers of workplace culture and how to create a positive culture for employees. As it seems that it only takes one person to negatively affect an organization’s culture, we will analyze how inclusivity and ethical processes throughout our organization can lead to a positive culture, and how we as leaders can facilitate this process.
Lastly, we will analyze how motivation can increase retention and productivity within an organization. As you are working through the last part of this module, think about your own experiences with motivation. Was there ever a time you just didn’t want to be at work? How productive were you that day? Every person has his or her own motivators to be productive. This module will conclude by taking a look at some common motivators, as well as how to use them to increase retention and productivity.
Analyze the effect workplace culture has on the organization as a whole.
Recognize the importance of cultural competency and sensitivity for a public service organization.
Examine the relationship between officer retention and motivation and morale.
Discuss indicators of, and reasons for, morale problems within an organization.
Analyze how to utilize internal and external resources to help motivate employees.
For Your Success & Readings
This week we focus on promoting growth and development in an organization while also motivating employees and increasing morale. As you work through this module, think about motivators you have in your current employment. What, if anything, might motivate you more? What might cause you to change jobs? What might convince you to change jobs? How can you use your own work experiences to help motivate your own employees? How about co-workers? Have you heard about experiences that impacted them? What might you change if you could?
Your discussion this week asks you to think about your own career experiences and asks how you might use these experiences to motivate employees and encourage job satisfaction. Don’t forget to think about workplace culture and its impact on the work environment as well as on retention.
. You will also choose one of two options for this week’s critical thinking assignment. As you are completing the assignment, make sure to include all of the necessary components, as well as an adequate amount of critical thinking and analysis.
