Case study analysis

Case Analysis (due Weeks 10-13)
OVERVIEW
During the first several weeks of the course, you are ntroduced to the theoretical foundations and
important variables relevant to Family Nurse Practitioner practice and health promotion. Now you will
have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned through an in-depth case analysis. The cases focus
on current and significant issues in health promotion; for example, obesity, breast feeding, and
immunizations. Your section instructor will facilitate and organize the process for assigning case
studies.
The assignment consists of two parts — a verbal presentation and a written paper, both due the week
that you present.
CASE STUDY
Identifying and Researching a Topic
Your section instructor will assign you one case and the specific week in which you will be expected to
present your work. Each student will be responsible for researching and presenting on one topic in that
case.
Note: How topics are assigned and distributed will vary by faculty section instructor. Section
instructors are available for questions and clarification.
If you are selecting your own topic, make sure you identify topics that are not too narrow or too broad
(e.g., prostate cancer is too broad). Identify salient health promotion topics for the client in the case,
and prioritize those topics by relevance to health promotion (i.e., what area of concern would you
address first?).
In doing research on your designated topic, you must use current journals and evidence-based
research. Also consider current practice guidelines, standards and recommendations for practice; you
may also consult websites and key informants — resources useful for clinicians. The research on your
topic needs to be in-depth and requires that you use a minimum of five resources and references.
(Note: You cannot use websites for all five sources. You must reference at least a couple of
evidence-based research articles.)
Presentation
You are responsible for presenting the most current, cutting edge information on your assigned topic.
Since this is the only time this topic is being discussed in the class it is important to present the
information that your colleagues need to know.
You are responsible for presenting all of the important information that a health care provider needs to
know about your specific topic. As you’re forming your presentation, consider the following:
➢ Relate topic/information back to the case. Depending on the topic you may need to include
epidemiology, current interventions, current resources, evidence based information, as well
as limitations. That is what is important for a FNP to know about this topic when they are in
practice.
➢ Evolving or developing information in the field. For example, there is current new knowledge
in neuroscience about the effect of abuse on the developing brain and what implications this
has for health and social well being.
➢ Strategies to integrate the information into FNP practice.

➢ Limitations about the knowledge in the area.
As part of your presentation, you will also be required to engage the class in a high level of discussion
and discourse. Prepare at least 1-2 questions for class discussion. In composing your
discussion prompt(s), remember that most topics have two sides—do you treat stress with
pharmacologic agents or mind body? Try to provoke thoughtful discussion about the complexities of
your case/topic. Submit your discussion questions to your instructor three days prior to
the live session.
Not that your presentation does not have to be a PowerPoint. You can be creative with how you decide
to present your information — create a video presentation, include interviews, present info from key
informants, etc. Whatever format you choose, your presentation content simply needs to be able to be
shared during a live session. Your presentation should be 10-15 mins, with an additional 5-10 mins of
group discussion to follow.
Paper
In addition to the live session presentation, you will also submit an accompanying 3-4 page (double
spaced) APA formatted paper on your topic. Your paper should summarize the important points for
FNP practice, controversial areas, and current research. Also include resources and websites that are
useful to providers. Your written analysis is due the same week as your presentation. Include a title and
reference page (minimum of five resources).
Things to Keep in Mind
➢ Audience: It is fair to assume that all students have a basic knowledge about most of the
topics that we will discuss. Therefore, you are expected to present information above that
basic level. For example, everyone is well aware of the complications from obesity and
smoking. Your presentation should focus on the latest research, current treatments and
interventions, recommendations, or controversies.
➢ Primary prevention: Consider primary care needs in the case, including screening and
evidence to back up your recommendations, and theory to facilitate behavior change. Make
sure you’re relating your presentation back to the specific case.
➢ Section instructors: There may be some variation among sections in what case studies are
used, how the topics are assigned, and the format of the live session presentations. Be in
touch with your section instructor with any questions.
SUBMISSION AND PRESENTATION
➢ Submit your discussion prompts to your section instructor three days prior to your live
session presentation.
➢ 10-15 minute presentation for the live session, plus approx. 20 mins of small group
discussion. Your instructor will select a specific individual to present at the time of the live
class.
➢ 3-4 page written analysis. Submit your paper to the assignment unit in the week you are
scheduled to present during live session.
