Compare Another Country by James Baldwin and Dracula by Bram Stroker.
Your paper should have a clear, unifying thesis that 1) identifies similarities and differences between the texts’ treatment of the theme, and 2) develops an argument about why the texts treat the theme similarly or differently. Provide evidence for your argument, especially textual
evidence (passages / paraphrasing), but also background or contextual material from class
and Blackboard, if relevant (remember to provide an in-text citation and include in the Works
Cited page!). Use the sub-questions to structure your argument.
Using the passage from Dracula that you discussed in the passage presentation,
develop or extend the interpretation presented by comparing that passage with another
passage from one of the other texts we have read on the course. Choose one of the points
below to guide your extended interpretation:
• “otherness” / fear of others, fear of the unknown, fear of letting in / invasion of foreign
cultures: Compare/contrast how otherness is portrayed in the texts, and how this reflects
(or challenges) different world views or historical context of the works themselves.
How is otherness used to advance a particular view of difference (i.e., national / cultural
/ racial / ethnic /sexual, etc.)
• disruption of binary oppositions: what are some of the main binary oppositions at play
in the works, and to what effect / extent do the works disrupt or uphold these, and for
what ultimate purpose? Consider where and when in the narratives binaries are
disrupted and whether they are ultimately restored: what world/philosophical view
(message, moral, etc.) are we left with?
• modernity vs. tradition: does the past threaten the present (or vice versa), and how does
modernity assert itself against the threat of the past? How does that past present itself:
as tradition, superstition, folklore, legend, etc., and what does this say about nation,
identity, and national identity?
1) Formatting guidelines for written assignments
• A4 size paper
• Normal margins
• Times New Roman, font size 12
• Double spacing throughout the whole document
• Do not add a space before or after paragraphs
• Page numbers in the bottom right-hand corner
III) Submitting the Paper
The paper should be 4 pages long, not including the Works Cited page. (If you end up with 4-
5 pages, that’s fine, but if you can only reach 3½ , then your argument is probably lacking
evidence and development).
Submit the paper on Blackboard. There will be a link under the “Papers and Assignments”
The paper is due, Thursday, May 11, by 7:00pm, Madrid time.
