Conduct a sociological analysis of the construction of masculinities and f

The analysis may be conducted on any television program. You will not be limited to genre or time frame. In other words you may view a situation comedy, drama, action/adventure, science-fiction, cartoon, soap opera, etc. Only commercials and not made for TV movies are off limits. Programs need not be brand new or still in production.

All papers should address the following issues: Hegemonic masculinity, complicit masculinity, subordinated masculinity, marginalized masculinity, the 7 characteristics of manhood (as discussed in class), emphasized femininities, intersecting identities (intersectionality or interlocking systems of oppression), and gender bias/sexism.

Some Guiding questions:
-In what ways do the male characters uphold the traditional hegemonic concept of masculinity and manhood? How are those characters not meeting these standards perceived by the other characters on the show? Is there a difference between male and female judgement of non-traditional masculine traits?

There are 3 basic approaches which may be taken.
1) a single episode analysis. Using this method you would analyze the symbolic interaction between characters within a single episode.

2) a single show analysis. Using this method you would analyze several episodes of a program examining the show as a whole.

3) historical comparison of shows. Using this method you would select two different shows of the same genre but from different time periods (example Father Knows Best and Modern Family) and compare and contrast them.

Please let me know what show you are going to do. I would prefer something modern. Psych, Rick and Morty, Homeland, Power, Billions, Justified…. Really whatever, but lets talk about the show you want to write about before we make a contract. also i have listed the 7 male traits that we talked about in class. The only citation needed will be from the episode(s). I’d prefer it to be one episode, but if you feel you can do better by writing about an entire series as a whole, that’s fine. Again, lets talk before any contract is made.
