English 1201 Controlled Argumentative Research Paper Instructions – note: your final essay is due in Week 8
YOUR GOAL: A controlled argumentative research paper is similar to a traditional argumentative research paper; it asks you to support your stance on an issue by using information as evidence to support your main points, much as a lawyer uses evidence to make his/her case. It is “controlled” because your topic selection is limited, and some sources that should be used in your final paper are provided for you.
THE PROCESS:
FIRST, you will choose one of the two assigned topics as the subject of your essay. The assigned topics come with TWO credible articles, each from an opposing side. After you select your topic, you will need to read both articles, regardless of your own stance on the issue, since the controlled argumentative research paper contains a section dedicated to addressing your opposition. Choose one of the following topics:

THEN, based on your selection, read the accompanying articles closely. They are:

· “Year-Round Schooling Offers Benefits Over a Traditional Calendar” by Charles Ballinger and Carolyn Kneese
· “The Traditional Calendar Can Continue to Work in the Future” by Robin Lockett Carter
NEXT, after closely reading these articles, use these sources to help frame your position on the topic. You should take a stance on your chosen topic and then support it with information from the chosen articles. Remember, you must acknowledge the opposition’s point as well and explain why you disagree or find that position limited.
FINALLY, write the essay.
ESSAY COMPONENTS:
1 introductory paragraph that reveals some broad knowledge of the overall topic and focuses on the major points of the paper (thesis statement).
2-3 body paragraphs that make the major points/claims of the thesis statement. This section will be the lengthiest portion of the paper and should include a thorough and well-supported argument/discussion.
1 body paragraph that addresses your opposition. This paragraph can best be organized by doing the following: introduce the opposing argument, acknowledge parts of the opposition that are valid, and counter the argument.
1 conclusion paragraph. Your conclusion should revisit your major claims and leave readers with a lasting impression as to why the topic is important and why readers should consider your position.
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS:
APA formatting, including a title page, page numbers, 12-point Times New Roman font, and double-spacing. Don’t forget to use the APA Template.
A reference page including the TWO essays accompanying your topic selection. We will be learning more about research and source integration in the next few weeks.
3-4 (750-900 words) pages of content (excluding title and references page).
