Students are required to conduct independent research on a choice of directed topics relevant to the course and to provide the findings of that research via an in-class presentation. The second writing assignment for this course consists of completing an analysis of a peer reviewed journal article. On the course website, under the court articles tab, are a number of peer reviewed articles on different areas of the court system; specifically, the prosecution, the defense, the judge, the jury, pretrial procedures and trial procedures. Choose one article from any one of those areas. Read the article and learn the issues that the article outlines. Next, search the library databases to find a recent (within the last 10 years) peer reviewed journal article l1, that discusses the same issues. In your writing assignment, outline the issues brought forth by the original article and write what you found in your research on the newer article. Are the issues/concerns that were brought up in the original article still an issue? Has the issue been resolved, or has it become a larger issue? Are there newer concerns that the original article neglected? There isn’t a right or wrong answer to the myriad of issues facing the court system, nor is the student expected to advocate one side or position of an argument, rather the student is expected to educate themselves on the current research that the academy is producing on the topic. .
