You will discuss in detail the two interviews you did, and the ways
that they increase your understanding of the context you studied for Assignment 1 and Assignment
2. In your conclusion, you should contextualize your topic in UAE culture in general, and engage
with two sources from our course, saying how they affect your thinking about your project.
YOUR ESSAY SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS:
Introduction to your setting and the interview process:
(1) Provide a brief recap of your context. Remind us where it is, and what happens there.
(2) Introduce your interviewees, and explain why you chose them.
(3) Describe your questions – what were they about? What did you want to know?
(4) Describe the interviews – where did you do them? In person? On the phone? How did you
record what happened? Did you take notes? Did you make an audio recording?
Discussion of the interviews:
**This is the heart of your paper. It should be the longest section.
(5) Discuss the most interesting things that you learned from the interviews. What were they? What
did you find interesting?
(6) Explain how you think the context you studied, and what you learned from the interviews, fit
into UAE culture.
(7) Connect your study to two sources from our course. These can be individual authors and their
articles, Powerpoints (where sometimes it is an author from the syllabus and sometimes it is Dr.
Nathalie), and any news articles that we have read. Think about: What would an anthropologist find
interesting about your context and your interviews? What themes from anthropology can you see
reflected in your own project?
Please also include all of your interview questions. You can, but are not obligated to, include any written notes you made during the interview. I will not accept recordings of any kind.
The Final Project will be graded on three rubrics: Coherence (30%), ethnographic appropriateness (50%), grammar, spelling, and length
(20%). This assignment is meant to develop skills of argumentation and debate in relation to a specific subject matter, demonstrate skills of logical argumentation on a specific subject matter, and synthesize information from different sources in the form of an extended essay. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate your observation skills and ethnographic sensitivty.
