discrimination

What is a problem that you’d like to see changed about your life, the lives of other people, or our
world today? Consider how colonialism and/or postcolonialism has, or have, impacted this problem.
Formulate an argument that you’d like to make in relation to this and then analyze one or more novels
that we’ve read this semester in relation to that problem, in terms of its origin, development, or
the solution, within the writing, bringing textual evidence to bear.
2. Literature and music are two different but arguably interconnected art forms through which we
make sense of, improve, and appreciate our lives and the world. Consider how colonialism and/or
postcolonialism has, or have, impacted this interconnection. Develop an argument that you’d like to
make in relation to this and then analyze one or more novels that we’ve read this semester in relation
to that interconnection, in terms of its origin, development, or solution within the writing, bringing
textual evidence to bear.
3. Theorists such as Ania Loomba and Robert J. C. Young discuss the impact of colonialism and
postcolonialism on literary writing and our responses to that writing. Consider how one or more
arguments of these or other scholars intersect with one or more novels that we’ve read this semester.
Come up with an argument that you’d like to make in relation to this and find textual evidence to
support your case.
After you have constructed your argument and found textual evidence to support that argument,
research and read one full-length, peer-reviewed, scholarly essay from a peer-reviewed journal or
one academic book chapter, in addition to the primary text(s) that you are analyzing and any other
sources you use. A link to the scholarly essay or chapter must be submitted with your own essay.
If you wish to make reference to the words or ideas of someone else in your writing, you are
required to fully and accurately acknowledge your source. There are severe penalties for plagiarism.
Plagiarism will be reported to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities and will result
in an F for the course.
You are asked to compose an introductory paragraph with a seductive opening, a powerful
argument, and clearly articulated indication of the route that the essay will follow in order to prove that
argument on Tuesday, November 24th. Please plan to share this on the due date, so that a small
group of your classmates and I may read your work with you and comment constructively on it. On
the same day, please also plan to share the scholarly essay that you have found and plan to read,
think about, and engage within your own essay.
