Optional Documentary Review Instructional Guidelines
This document serves as a guiding post for how this assignment is to be completed and handed into Blackboard. Take tedious notes while watching the documentary. You will be asked to compare the documentary to materials learned in the textbook. The expected review must be comprehensive and deeply critical—the expectation is that students are synthesizing both the documentary together with the expected areas in the textbook. These submissions are to be completed in exactly two pages (no less or more) and will earn a person up to 5 points. They will be graded based on grammar, level of comprehensiveness, and attention to directions/instructions noted in this document.
One must go beyond the simplicity of a discussion post. For instance, in composing a review one
1. Insert actual scenes, names of characters from the documentary, explain the plot, etc., to
fully contextualize and show the instructor that you’ve actually absorbed the documentary,
but that you can also apply it to the text.
2. Second, be sure that you’re citing back to the course text from the areas expected (which
are noted below). You want to show that you have comprehension of the areas expected
and that you can apply them to the documentary. By doing this you’re showing you can
synthesize both major points from the documentary with the textbook.
Below is the name of the documentary and it is hyperlinked to an IMDB page that will give you
additional info regarding where you can go to watch the film. You will notice that many stream services hold it, but you can also rent it for less than $5.00 from most sources if you don’t have subscription to a stream service. The onus is on the student to obtain access to the film so that they can take advantage of this opportunity. The expected assignment is also below:
Documentary: They Call us Monsters
Keeping with the guidelines mentioned above, you are expected to take self-chosen, relevant factors from noted portions of the textbook below and relate them to the documentary. Do so in ways that provide a comprehensive and deeply critical overview of the documentary. You are expected to use the following chaps as material for this optional assignment:
• Chap 3
• Chap 9
• Chap 12
Personal note: If you need to pay for the documentary I’m happy to include it as tip once you show receipt of how much you have paid.
