exploration of one sociopolitical topic from at least three Black political spec

Over the course of the semester we have focused on looking at various Black political
perspectives from primarily a theoretical and conceptual standpoint. Many of you have asked
about applying these theories and how can they generate solutions for the current issues that
impact Africana communities. Your final paper and presentation will give you the opportunity to
answer these questions and share your conclusions with your classmates.
Your final paper and presentation will consist of an exploration of one sociopolitical topic from
at least three Black political spectrums. Topics can include but are not limited to: reparations,
Black Lives Matter movement, the state of Black conservatism, Black feminism, Black
sociopolitical organizing, independent Black schooling, Black participation in mainstream
political parties, Black participation in non-mainstream political parties, etc. The final paper will
consist of a 3-page essay that provides an overview of the presentation. Your presentation will
consist of at least 10 slides via PowerPoint, Prezi or any other presentation platform.

General Outline for Final Presentation
I. Introduction (Slide 1)
As many of you know, context is key! Use this slide to grapple with introducing and
contextualizing the topic you are attempting to explore. You should consider the
relevance of the topic and why we should care about exploring it.
II. Theoretical Background (Slides 2-4)
This set of slides covers the three Black political theoretical perspectives that you will
rely upon to investigate your topic. You should used Dawson as a point of departure but make
sure to utilize his references in order to further clarify your understanding of each political
perspective. Again you should consider why you believe these theoretical perspectives will be
beneficial in the exploration of your topic.
III. Historical Overview (Slides 5-7)
This section deals with the historical roots of your research topic and previous research
conducted in this area or related areas. I’d like you to provide some historical context on how
previous researchers have attempted to investigate this topic.
IV. Analysis & Synthesis (Slides 8-10)
Use this set of slides to apply the theoretical perspectives to your research topic. What
conclusions are you able to come to? What solutions do these theoretical perspectives provide?
What are some future questions and concerns that they bring forth?
IV. Conclusion (Slides 10-12)
Summarize the most fundamental ideas and arguments you have analyzed. Also explain
how your understanding of this area of research and your own personal perception,
comprehension and evaluation of this topic has changed and/or developed during the course of
this assignment.
General Thoughts on Final Paper
For the final paper I am looking for only 3 pages that puts into words the key components
of your presentation; use the slides to guide your presentation of ideas within written word. I will
be looking for a well organized paper that can supplement the presentation. Since this is due one
week after the presentation you should consider the feedback and comments of your classmates
as you complete the paper. Please make sure to include a works cited list.
