Final paper proposal and protocol

Your final paper project for the course offers you the opportunity to use what you have learned in
the course and apply these ideas in an interview about women’s participation in political
violence. The purpose of the paper is to understand how people in our everyday lives
understand women’s participation in political violence and to do so through a one-on-one
interview. Leading up to the July 3 due date (about 4 weeks from today), we will work together
to allow you the maximum opportunity to develop a paper project that you can be truly proud of.
We will start with a proposal and a short interview “protocol.”
Paper Proposal Assignment
Before you start writing your final paper, you must submit a preliminary 1 page proposal and 1
page interview protocol consisting of approximately 5-7 questions. Submitting these materials
now serves several important purposes:
 It will require you to start thinking about the final paper several weeks before it is due
 Allows you to get feedback from me and your colleagues
 Head off any trouble that you have in selecting a person to interview and get you
thinking about your interview protocol.
 Most importantly, to give you the confidence to write the paper without concerns that
you are not “heading in the right direction.”
The proposals are due in class on June 11
Please come to class with prepared to share your proposal and questions with a partner. During
class we will “pair off” into break out rooms where you and a partner will review this work and
talk through it conception and implementation. You will also upload these documents to be
before class on June 11. I will review you proposal and protocol and return them to you by June
16 with helpful comments and suggestions on how to move forward with the paper.
How to develop the proposal and interview protocol
A successful proposals and protocols address three basic elements. These include:
1) Identify the person in your life you would like to interview. If this person is a
community leader or holds some form of title, please include that information. If the
person does not hold a title but is related to you, please explain the relationship.
2) Outline your motivation in selecting this person for an interview – why are this person’s
ideas important to you? What do you hope they will bring to the interview
3) Include 5-8 questions (not including demographic questions such as name, age,
profession, etc.) that you think will help you understand your interviewee’s position/ideas
4) on the role of women or gender and its relationship to participation in political violence?
You will pose more than 5 questions for the interview (but probably no more than about
10) but these questions are just to get you started.
