FYES Reflective Essay

Purpose of the Assignment

The purpose of the Reflective Essay is for students to examine their growth over the past semester and identify how this will aid them in reaching their short and long term goals. Students are encouraged to take this opportunity to think critically about what has brought them to college and how they plan to move forward professionally through their time at Atlanta Technical College. This reflection may also involve consideration of factors outside of education, such as personal responsibilities and motivations that impact these goals. We have covered several topics this semester that should be viewed as strategies for success that students may implement in their college careers and beyond. Reviewing these tools through your notes and textbook may help you to understand how they fit into your professional journey.

Step one: Read over these directions and any notes pertaining to those strategies covered in this course which you feel will be most helpful moving forward in your education and professional career.

Step two: Write your reflection essay about what you have learned about yourself and your goals this semester. It may help students to keep in mind the following questions:

· What brought you to Atlanta Technical College? What motivated you to pursue the program in which you are enrolled?

· What skills did you hope to gain from this course? Do you feel as if you have done this? How do you plan on implementing the information from this course to ensure success in future classes?

· What are your main short and long term goals? How did you come to these goals and how do you plan on achieving them?

Step three: Read over your paper before turning it in; it is recommended you do this several times. Make sure your paper is well-organized, is written in standard essay format (it should contain an Introduction, Body, and Conclusion in separate paragraphs), and has correct spelling and grammar. Since this is a reflection essay, you will be using the first person throughout your writing (using “I”), but this does not mean that this assignment should be viewed as casual.

General Requirements & Deadlines

· Must be at least three pages typed, double spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font with standard margins

· Proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, etc. (i.e., well-written)

o As you are not required, nor expected, to consult any outside sources there is no need to include a Work’s Cited page. However, if you do use ANY information from a source outside of your notes and/or textbook (or if you directly quote your textbook or any other source), you are required to use proper citation and include a Works Cited page.

DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Plagiarism will NOT be accepted and WILL result in a zero on this assignment. If you need any help, contact me to set up a meeting.

When I reflect back on my journey of how I decided to become a student at Atlanta Technical College, the choice was somewhat simple for me. I was in my last year of high school in Maryland and I had already decided that a traditional college wasn’t what I was prepared for. I wanted to gain a skill, but there are no technical schools in the state of Maryland that offer what I was looking for. After speaking to my brother who attends Clark Atlanta University, the research for schools began. My brother, along with my parents helped me to find a school that would accommodate my goal of becoming a skilled Automotive Technician. Since my brother was already living in Atlanta, it only made sense for me to pack my bags and take the long trip from Maryland to Atlanta to pursue my short term goal of obtaining the training necessary to become an Automotive Technician. My first year was exciting because it allowed me to actually dive right into the hands-on training. I became very focused and was able to achieve a 4.0 GPA my 1st and 2nd semesters while we were in the middle of the pandemic. By the time the summer session started, things had begun to change. Family members became ill from COVID-19 and our family suffered some tragic losses. I didn’t realize how much of an effect this had on me until I noticed that my grades started to spiral out of control. As a result, I have had to withdraw from a couple of my classes and re-enroll this semester. A couple of the skills that have helped me while taking this course are learning to write Cornell Notes, techniques to help deal with stress, interviewing techniques, and I’m still trying to master my resume and cover letter skills. My long term goal is to be able to own an automotive shop in my hometown of Maryland.
