A second paper is required for this course. You will have a choice of method (see below). The requirements of this paper is that it must be 1-2 pages in length (typed, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, 1” margins).
Option 1: Visit a Los Angeles area art museum and record your experiences in writing. What did you like most about the museum? What new things did you discover? I’m especially interested in your personal reaction to the museum-going experience (whether positive or negative). NOTE: many museums are closed on Mondays. Check days and hours of visitation before making your way out there…
Option 2: View an art documentary and write a synopsis. You can visit the SMC library and view one of the art documentaries they have located there. Be sure to view a film (about one hour in length) that deals with works of art from our period of interest. You can, of course, use other sources (such as renting, PBS, History Channel, Discovery Channel, etc…) to view films, as long as they have an art historical focus. Give me the title of the video, who made it, year, etc.
Option 3: Visit a virtual museum collection from a notable/reputable museum (like MOMA) and write about at least two specific works of art. What is the museum’s name? Where is the museum? Why did you choose these works? Is there a relationship between them? Be sure to include the weblinks/urls of the works that you are discussing and cite the museum from which they came.
Option 4: Find a Khan Academy video relevant to the second half of Western Art. If you do this option and find a video that relates to what we have discussed or what we will discuss in class, then include the URL. Describe the significance of the video. Remember that the videos must be 100% relevant to the course content, and your paper should explain its relevance. They could be video clips on a particular artist, art, art history, art historians, new discoveries, museums, art galleries, art in the news, etc…
Option 5: Find an online art-related article. If you see an article online that you think is relevant to our class, then include the URL in a paper that explains the significance of the article. Is it scholarly or popular? Consider its contribution to art news.
You should spend at least an hour visiting, viewing, perusing, etc with the material before you start writing. Also, the relevant time frame is Early Renaissance to Realism, so, date-wise, from between 1300 and 1870 CE. If it’s not related to our course, no credit.
