Find a news paper article on a current issue related to gender in the global south and use sociological concepts from the reading (you will need to cite at least three reading from the files I have uploaded, more if you would like). It will be three pages double spaced. It will be structured as follows; Introduction, Question and thesis, Hypothesis, evidence, and argument, Assessment, Summary, and Conclusion.
Please read the sample paper (Module #1 Paper) first, I don’t want you to follow it exactly, however reading it first will help to make my instructions make sense. I will also attach an example of what a good paper and bad paper look like. The sample paper I upload is more of an example of a B paper.
The introduction should contextualize the articles. For example, Introduction: In the context of rife police violence in the United States, a social movement raising awareness about racial equality and social justice has emerged in past few years. This movement, BLM, has engaged in a range of different types of protest from symbolic gestures including athletes kneeling during the national anthem, to symbolic violence such as destruction of property. A question and thesis statement: Why would NFL teams rather lose games than sign Colin Kaepernick? Because in an apartheid state such as the USA, questioning racial hierarchies is seen as a threat to the status quo.
(the examples I am giving, and the sample paper I will attach is a similar paper to the one you will write, except in the sample paper the topic is race in the global south while the paper you will write is class in the global south)
As for assessing the evidence, look to the readings for this module and think about how the authors would answer this question. For example in the race paper, CLR James might argue that state violence against black Americans can be traced to colonialism and slavery. Police violence against people of colour is the continuation of an economic system that creates racial hierarchies in order for those at the top of the economic hierarchy— rich whites — to profit.
• Frantz Fanon’s writings explain how colonial culture dehumanises and devalues people of colour. In a society where people of colour are made to feel inferior, Kaepernick’s symbolic gestures towards equality are a threat to the existing economic order.
Immanuel Wallerstein would say that Kaepernick’s protest exposes the contradictions of universalism and racism-sexism as the legitimating ideologies of the capitalist world-system and seeks to create a new, different, culture. Because his protests threaten the stability of the legitimating ideology of capitalism, he poses a threat. For the paper on class I would like you to do the same but utilizing the class based articles I will attach bellow.
Evaluate: Which of the authors got it right? Why do I think this? Summary: Because of the history of racial apartheid in the United States, the BLM protests calling for equality are more of a threat to the existing social order. Conclusion: I would add my informed opinion about the issue and say what I think can be done to overcome the problem.
Recap, introduce the news article, ask a question, provide a thesis statement and outline the paper. What would author 1 say bout the topic? What would author 2 say bout the topic? What would author 3 say bout the topic? Which of the three do you think does the best job of helping us to understand this current event? Why so? Summarize and conclude (your opinion and your thoughts on possible solutions)
