***THIS IS THE VIGNETTE YOU WILL WRITE ABOUT USING THE GOTTMAN APPROACH***
Vignette #1: Judy & Frank

Judy left a message on your voicemail. “My husband, Frank, has been having an affair for a year. I’ve kicked him out and filed for divorce, but now I’m rethinking things. I want us to come in. Can you see us?” Her voice sounded low, monotonal, and depressed. When you called her back, Judy recounted that 3 months earlier she had been checking email on their home computer, and had discovered a message to Frank from a mysterious “Anna.” It was full of sexual innuendos, suggesting a rendezvous in San Francisco, where Frank was traveling the next week. Judy had confronted Frank, who at first denied knowing Anna. Over the next two days of pounding conversations, Frank finally admitted having an intimate “friendship” with Anna, who worked in his San Francisco office. Judy screamed at Frank to leave the house and not come back. He moved in with a male friend across town. In phone conversations that followed, there was more screaming and more of “his blatant lies.” She then hired a detective, who searched both their home email and a secret email line Frank had set up, as well as hotel check-ins in San Francisco. A bigger and more devastating story emerged of monthly sexual liaisons, multiple phone calls, and continuous email containing sexual content for more than a year. Armed with this information, Judy consulted an attorney and filed divorce papers. Frank begged her to reconsider. She initially refused but then began to think it through. Given their long-standing relationship of 21 years and a daughter in college who would be devastated by their breakup, Judy decided to seek couples therapy to give the relationship one final try. Nervously, Frank agreed to participate.
