Introduction:

history of the First Nations prior to the arrival of the Europeans in the early 17th century, as well as the first series of interactions the French made with the First Nations during that time. One of the first people who came to communicate, interact with, and observe the lifestyles of the First Nations were French Catholic missionaries who hoped to convert the First Nations to Christianity. Some of them, such as Paul le Jeune, lived in First Nations villages for a stretch of time and recorded and eventually published his experiences and observations. On the other hand, in the last few decades, historians have closely examined surviving historical records in order to gain a better sense of the early days of New France. For this assignment, you are going to read two sources: a historical document written by Jesuit priest, and a secondary source written by a scholar.

Assignment:

Using evidence from the two sources provided, write an essay answering the following prompt question: According to le June and Blackburn, did the European newcomers in the 17th century demonstrate racist attitudes and behaviors towards the First Nations?

What to do:

History essays are never mere summaries of facts and pieces of information. Instead, they are written arguments called analyses. Make sure you compose an analytical, persuasive paper that tries to prove/demonstrate something, and that makes reference to “both sides” using evidence and refuting counter-evidence. You must demonstrate which side, in your view, was stronger/more prevalent. You should introduce your strongest points/evidence progressively throughout your paper essay. I recommend you draft an essay outline is the first step.

Assignment Outcomes:

The critical reading of a historical document and a scholarly article of its most important features.
The contextualizing of specific information presented in two sources, comparing and taking different viewpoints and comprehending different lines of argument.
The comprehending and assessing of different perspectives and lines of argument
