The period of the antebellum is from 1800 to 1860. In that period, the South created the most profitable slave empire the world had ever seen. Far from disappearing as Jefferson and Lincoln thought it would, slavery spread its tentacles to almost every part of U.S. society and threatened to swallow up all of the new territories claimed by the U.S.
