A finished Rhetorical Analysis paper should have several important things:
An introduction paragraph–with a central argument. This should be where you provide your theory: How does your author use rhetoric to persuade their audience? What’s their strategy. This is your thesis, and it should grow naturally out of the analysis you do in your body paragraphs next. (This is why the thesis will probably be the last thing you edit and perfect in your final draft–it is easier to write once you’ve analyzed the material.)
Body paragraphs analyzing your primary text, using the WHAT, HOW and WHY analytical method. Each point you make, in each paragraph should fulfill all three.
Periodically use your THREE secondary sources to help you complete the WHAT, HOW and WHY parts of your analysis. By using them to give background information about the rhetorical situation: Who is the author? What is the subject matter? Who is the audience and how do they feel about these things?
A conclusion paragraph that avoids repeating all your former points. But stays on topic as well. Remember: A good conclusion should help your audience see WHY the point you discussed mattered and was important. It should tell them why they should keep thinking about this. And remember: YOUR point is not the same as the point of your central text. Your point is not to reinforce their point but to make your own theory about HOW they use effective rhetoric. So your conclusion should make us see WHY effective rhetoric like you analyzed is helpful or useful to us. How does it benefit or hurt us?

In a separate section, you will also add a FINAL REFLECTION on the assignment, looking back on your progress through the drafting process. Which parts of the process have been easy and which have been hard? Which elements of your draft so far are you proud of? Give an example of a part of your draft that you think is particularly well written, or which captures some aspect of the analytical process well. Then, give an example of a part of your draft that you are still struggling with–a place where you know you need to continue expanding or clarifying your analysis. Explain what you think is weak, missing or incomplete about that part. Support your reflection with specific evidence–which means quoting portions of your own writing.
