For this assignment you are to apply the methods of analysis we have used in class, to clearly explicate an aspect of the film that you find significant or meaningful. Examples would include themes, motifs, setting, symbol/archetype, mood, lighting (use of), conflict, character transformation, the “Hero’s Journey” expressed within the film. In tandem with this, you are to apply 2 different strategies/lenses in your explication. For example, maybe you saw the themes of Love, Exploitation, Colonialism, or Identity, or the motifs of the Toruk, Avatar, the color blue or the extortion of Unobtanium. Then you choose the motif of the Toruk. You could examine how this is a symbol for Jake’s dedication and commitment to the Na’vi people and their struggle to preserve their homeland. You could examine this through the psychological and feminist strategies where you could view Jake’s proving of his dedication through the psychological strategy in regard to the commitment and follow through needed to achieve his goal, prove his point and fulfill his purpose, by embracing his indigenous identity. By analyzing it with the feminist strategy, you could look at how, by embracing his indigenous identity he becomes a part of a more matriarchal culture that is closer to nature and the Divine Feminine. The planet itself is named after the first human in Greek Mythology, a woman, Pandora. If you see a recurring symbol throughout the film (like a phrase, object, animal, or actual symbol) you may want to use the mythological approach. It is up to you to choose which strategies/lenses you want to use to examine the film. Throughout your explication, you need to support your statements by providing examples from the film in the form of dialogue, scene summary (not too much) / description (short), or film technique.
