identification of Unknown lab report

Uknown lab report guidelines shortlist.
The paper must be written in Times New Roman, Courier New, Calibri, or Arial set at 11 or 12 pts and with a line spacing of 2.0 (double spaced). Margins must be 1 inch all around (select “Normal” under Margins tab). Do not insert extra line spacing between paragraphs (to prevent Word from automatically doing so, select “No Spacing” in Styles). This paragraph, as an example, is written in Arial 11 pts, double spaced, 1 inch margins, No Spacing.
Title page must be written as specified in the long-form guidelines distributed previously.
Abstract page is on page 2, it must be half page to one page long max. It summarizes the paper; therefore, you MUST state the result of the paper in the last sentence of the abstract: the identities of your two unknown organisms.
Introduction must start on the page after the Abstract (page 3), must be 2 to 4 pages long, you must cite your references (choose a style and be consistent throughout the paper). Intro talks about microbiology in general (again, cite your sources), and the last paragraph or two focus on the work done in the paper and its goals. The last sentence of the introduction MUST state the result of the paper, just as in the Abstract: the identities of your two organisms.
Dichotomous Key should go after the Introduction (or after the References); it must be typed (no exceptions) and possibly fit on one page. Make sure the font is of an appropriate size (that is, readable without having to use a magnifying lens, or no less than 8 pts size). Also, double check the spelling of the scientific names and make sure they are written in italics (that is the rule in science for scientific names).
Materials and Methods. At least one and a half to two pages, no more than three. Do not give too many details about each test performed (you may/should cite the Lab Manual as a source where appropriate). Never give the result of any test in this section; results go in the Results section. Clearly state which test you performed for Unknown A and Unknown B, including the confirmatory tests.
Results. At least two pages, no more than four. Here you write about the results of each test (including the results of your Gram stain, McConkey and EMB plates, or other staining technique you used—some of you may have done a simple stain to confirm the morphology of their gram+ unknown). In the Results, you will disclose the names of your unknowns and the letter by which you first identified them (for example, A was E. coli and B was S. typhimurium). Make sure you clearly state which test results are for unknown A and which for B and don’t forget to talk about the results of the confirmatory test. For some of the results you may also want to point to figures/pictures that you took (all figures must go at the end of the paper, NOT mixed in with your writing).
Discussion. At least two pages, no more than four. In this section you talk about your experience working on the unknown, the difficulties and pitfalls encountered, the mistakes you may have made along the way (you don’t lose points for those), and the shortcuts taken if any and the rationale behind them. You must also give general information about the two organisms that you identified; for example, their history/discovery; their economical/clinical importance; and any other data you may deem interesting (of course, you must cite your sources).
References. Here you must list all the books, papers, internet sources you used to write the paper. Use either APA or MLA format, but not a mix of both. Do not list sources that you have not used or cited in the text of the paper. A minimum of three references are required (the ones listed in Sample Paper 2).
Tables and Figures. All tables and figures must be placed after the References section. Tables are numbered with Roman numerals (Table I; Table II; Table IV; etc.) and must have a short title describing their contents. Tables cannot substitute for the actual written portion of the paper. Figures must be numbered with Arabic numbers (Figure 1; Figure 2; etc.) and must have a short caption/legend describing what we see in the figure/picture; however, the convention in scientific writing is that the caption/legend should not state the result of the test(s) depicted in the figure. For example:
Figure 3. Mannitol test for Unknown 3A (left) and Nitrate test for Unknown 3B (right).
No need to put more than 6-8 figures in the paper (you can put fewer than that), and you may place more than one table/figure per page.
