Question One

Throughout the course, we described the field of criminology as playing host to two contrasting theoretical perspectives: Consensus Perspectives and Conflict Perspectives.
For this question, you will first be asked to explain the central assumptions of these perspectives.
Then, drawing from at least two course themes, criminological concepts or case studies (from any of the materials that were discussed in class, in the Boyd text, or in the films that we watched) you will be asked to discuss which perspective you feel does a better job of explaining the organization and goals of the criminal justice system.
Do you feel that one perspective is better than the other, or do you feel that these perspectives are useful in understanding different elements of the criminal justice system?

Question Two

Throughout the course, we discussed perspectives suggesting that the criminal justice system promotes discrimination based on one’s biological sex or gender.
For this question, you will be asked to explain why feminist perspectives argue that the criminal justice system promotes patriarchy and identify two concepts or areas of research that current-day feminist scholars focus on to reinforce this argument. Finally, please explain how you feel the problems that feminist researchers identify can be improved.

Question Three

During the course, we have discussed how elements of the criminal justice system, as well as some forms of criminological theory, can be argued to promote euro-centricity and ethnic discrimination.
For this question, you will be asked to identify and discuss one early criminological theory that promoted ethnic discrimination, one early sociological theory suggesting that ethnic discrimination influences crime, and discuss why post-colonial theorists argue that some forms of criminal conduct can be approached as examples of resilience. Finally, please explain how you feel that the problems that post-colonial perspectives focus on can be improved.
