Investments Discussion 2
These are (even more!) turbulent times for investments. Use internet sources such as CNBC.com, Yahoo! Chapter 12 in the required text deals partially deals with Macroeconomic Analysis. Read chapter 12.
The financial media has spoken a lot recently about whether the (eventual) recovery in the macroeconomy will be V-shaped, U-shaped, or L-shaped. Read the article in the link below that illustrates these types of recoveries.
https://hbr.org/2020/03/understanding-the-economic-shock-of-coronavirus
(If you cannot access the article, email me)
Then use internet sources such as CNBC.com, Yahoo! Finance, marketwatch.com, the Wall Street Journal, and google terms like “what type of economic recovery can we expect from the Coronavirus?”
Write a brief summary of the types of recoveries, and then provide an opinion on what type of recovery the US economy will have? Feel free to also discuss international economies as well (after all, we currently operate in an incredibly integrated world economy). Will that change? Be sure to cite the articles you read.
Your response should be about 1.5 pages.

Chapter 12 in the required text deals partially deals with Industry Analysis. Read chapter 12.
The financial media has spoken a lot recently about “winners and losers” in terms of industries in the economy. For example, read the link below:
https://www.semrush.com/blog/market-winners-losers-coronavirus/
While right now it is clear that certain industries are short-term winners (e.g., videoconferencing) and short-term losers (e.g., cruises, airlines, retail), I am more interested in your longer-term assessment. In other words, will the Coronavirus impact forever change certain industries? Has it just increased the speed at which some industries that were in a secular decline (e.g., brick-and-mortar retail).
Then use internet sources such as CNBC.com, Yahoo! Finance, marketwatch.com, the Wall Street Journal, and google terms like “which industries will recover from the coronavirus impact and which will be permanently damaged?”
Write a brief summary of the way certain industries are being affected, and then provide an opinion on the long-term prospects of certain industries that will recover and/or permanently be impacted. Be sure to cite the articles you read.
Your response should be about 1.5 pages.

Investments Discussion 6
In the lecture, we discussed how to attribute the return difference between portfolios to differences in asset allocation percentages and differences in sector and security selection.
There is a large debate in the market on whether investors should simply use index funds (think of these as benchmark portfolios) or actively managed funds (think of these as funds that are actively managed that try to beat the benchmark by varying asset allocation percentages and/or sector and security selections).
Google terms like “which perform better: actively or passively managed funds” and “are actively managed funds worth their fees” and “do actively managed funds tend to perform better in certain types of markets vs. passively managed funds” to familiarize yourself with definitions, the data, and the debate.
Write a summary demonstrating you understand the key features of the debate. Then let me know your opinion on whether you would use passive or active management (or a combination of both) to manage your retirement portfolio and why?
Your response should be about 1.5 pages.
