Faith and Culture– Jesus Christianity Paper
1700 to 2500 strict word count
Please use The Gospel of John as your source to answer the following 4 questions (min. 425 words per answer). Be sure to refer to specific passages (e.g. John 14:1-4) as you respond to the prompts; quoting actual passages and verses is required. You may refer to other biblical passages as well, but beyond that no other outside resources are permitted either for use in the paper or consultation without teacher permission. (I.e. do NOT put these questions into Google to see what you find. Use your own mind, skills, notes from class, teacher, etc.)
1. What does John seek to persuade us to believe about the identity of Jesus Christ and his relationship to God the Father and the Holy Spirit? Be sure to consider the claims Jesus makes about himself, claims made about him by others, and his many interactions with contemporaries.
2. How does John understand the relationship between Judaism and the (then) new movement of Christianity? Consider the Law, Jewish traditions (holidays, rituals), and pivotal figures from the Old Testament like Abraham and Moses; how are these things an important context for understanding Jesus and his early followers?
3. What is the significance of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection for Christians, according to John? What problems do humans have according to John’s presentation of Christianity, and how is Jesus the solution to this problem (or problems)? In what ways are these terms important for understanding what is distinctive about Christian beliefs?
4. Is John’s mission as articulated in 20:30-31 successful? Do YOU find his case convincing that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and you will have life in his name? What is the most reasonable position to hold about Jesus–he is liar, lunatic, or Lord? (Or do you think he is none of those, but rather just a good moral teacher?) Defend your answer. (Just like the worldview paper, this question is asking for your personal response to the question; you will not receive a good grade based on whether or not you find John’s argument compelling, but how well you defend your position.)
