a. As of the end of 2002, identify US vital national interests (things very important to the US, which might include allies, resources, safety of Americans (especially the homeland), widely held American values, significant economic interests…) which might be effected by or related to the middle east and especially Iraq.

b. Identify (with what was believed to be true as of 1 March 2003) probable threats to those vital U.S. interests posed by Saddam’s Iraq.

c. If you were the U.S. president on March 1, 2003, and considering what you found in answering a. and b. above, as well as question # 5 from last week’s written question set 7, what would you have done about the situation with Iraq as you found it on 1 March, 2003?

Notice the question does NOT ask you to evaluate anything about President Bush & his administration, or anything he actually did regarding Iraq (such as the actual 2003 invasion). That is not the question. If you want to address this separately AFTER answering the above questions, go ahead. But label is as a side note.

2. The U.S. spends a considerable amount of money on Israel (some $3 billion annually) and political capital (such as supporting Israel against many complaints in the UN Security Council). What U.S. national interests, if any, are served by doing this?

3. Note the text’s definition of terrorism on page 346. With one main exception, it is very similar to what is currently found on the CIA website: “The Intelligence Community is guided by the definition of terrorism contained in Title 22 of the US Code, Section 2656f(d): The term “terrorism” means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents.” (see https://www.cia.gov/news-information/cia-the-war-on-terrorism/terrorism-faqs.html (Links to an external site.))
a. What is the main significant difference between the two definitions?
b. Evaluate the discussion of terrorism presented by the text pp 344-47. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

4. Looking at the Elusive Peace documentary, as well as chapter 21 from Goldschmidt, plus current events and any other sources you desire, what is the current state of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict?

Note: these questions below are relating to the ones above!

Instructions: Post your answer to question 1 from this weeks Written Questions (you can improve if for your posting here if you want). Find a reputable article or website that comments on the reasons for the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and use it in your post. As a reminder, here is question 1:

Notice the question does NOT ask you to evaluate anything about President Bush & his administration, or the actual invasion. It DOES ask you to identify US vital interests, identify (with what was known as of 1 March 2003) threats to those vital interests posed by Saddam’s Iraq, and then explain what action, if any, the US should have taken (what would you have done if you were president in March 2003).
