Write a 4-5 pageessay about Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “I, being born a woman and distressed”; Raab’s “Marriage”; Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”; Plath’s “Daddy,” “Lady Lazarus”; Harper’s “Slave Mother”; and/or Hayden’s “Middle Passage” according to one of the following topics:
Love and Marriage. How do Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “I, being born a woman and distressed,” Lawrence Raab’s “Marriage,” and/orT.S. Elliot’s “Prufrock,” represent how men and women experience the institution and conventions of marriage, or the social conventions of courtship and dating, differently? What do they say (or what do they miss) aboutquestions of gender and/or sexuality, for example? As with all of these topics, you will want to be aware of the different historical periods of these works, and how they consequently emerge out of, and speak to, different social convention.
American Identity. Several poems that we’ve discussed consider the meaning of American national identity, although the nature of that identity is often conflicted, rivenby the historical violence of slavery, patriarchy, or imperialism. Discuss how two poems that we have discussed this term engage with, seek to represent, or question the meaning of Americanness—or even identity, more broadly.
Plath and the Holocaust. Sylvia Plath’s poems, particularly “Daddy” (1962) and “Lady Lazarus” (1962), use the imagery of the Holocaust in order to represent her personal problems. How do these poems use the Holocaust? In what way is her use of the Holocaust problematic? Or is it perfectly fine to use genocide in her poetry?
Slavery. In this essay, discuss the meaning of slavery in Harper’s “Slave Mother” and Hayden’s “Middle Passage.” Of course, these poems are from vastly different time periods and seek to represent different experiences of slavery. How are they similar or different? What aspects of slavery do they both highlight as significant (like the body, for example)?
Poetic Form.Fragmentation is central to the form of both Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”and Hayden’s “Middle Passage.” How does fragmentation appear in these poems? What does this fragmentation mean and why does it matter?
PLEASE COMBINE TWO OR MORE POEMS FROM THE ABOVE TO WRITE THE ESSAY.

•Ensure that your argument and supporting claims are backed up with direct evidence from the poems, and that you analyze and explain that evidence thoroughly.
.•Make sure that your argument can be completed in the requisite 4-5 pages.
•Make sure that you give yourself enough time to review your work.
PLEASE MAKE YOU INCLUDE IN-TEXT CITATIONS IN THE ESSAY AND PROVIDE REFERENCES AT THE END.
