Research Project (25%)
Write an extended argument that engages with multiple viewpoints;
Learn how to conduct a comprehensive review of the literature to ensure a research problem has not already been answered [or you may determine the problem has been answered ineffectively] and, in so doing, become better at locating scholarship related to your topic;
Improve your general research and writing skills;
Practice crafting the thesis statement;
Nurture a sense of inquisitiveness within yourself and to help see yourself as an active participant in the process of doing scholarly research.
As our theme this semester is about activism and social justice, your research project requires you to write an extended argument that argues for a proposed set of solutions for a targeted issue in society.
Your essay must be thesis-driven and argue (arguable claim + good reasons) that specific and researched solution may take steps toward solving an issue.
Your topic should be narrow, plausible, and demonstrate critical thinking. Your essay should be 10-12 pages long (not including title page and references) and you will need to use 10 sources to support your ideas.
At least 8 sources must be scholarly sources; up to 3 maybe credible sources that are not scholarly such as information from national or international associations, political organizations, etc.
Your essay must engage with other viewpoints and scholarship about this issue
You may continue with the topic that you address in your academic essay.
* The introduction states your thesis, rationalizes your work, and explains why it is relevant. This section is really the most important part of your paper as it directs its flow. Specifics are not required – that is for the body of the your paper. Includes the thesis.
– Background and Significance
* 1-2 paragraphs tops
* Lays the foundation for proving your argument.
* Explains significance of the chosen topic and relevance
– Claims that Support Your Thesis
* Provides scholarly evidence to support your claim, which in turn supports the thesis.
* 1-3 paragraphs per supporting claim
– Refuting Opposing Arguments
* The reason that arguments are debatable is because they have more than one side.
* Explains why other solutions are less effective / ideas are less useful than yours
* Wraps up argument, reminds readers why your ideas are best/most useful/better researched…etc
* Restates the significance of the argument
* Points to the future (future research, future implications, etc.)
As with any scholarly research paper, you must cite the sources you used. This section should testify to the fact that you did enough preparatory work to ensure the project will complement and not duplicate the efforts of other researchers. Start a new page and use the heading “References,” “Works Cited,” or “Bibliography” centered at the top of the page. Cited works should always use a standard format that follows the writing style advised by your discipline. (This section does not count towards the total page length of your research proposal)
In addition to the research paper instructions, I will submit my planning outline and annotated bibliography. You can use the sources I selected as you see fit and include others that are relevant to the paper. This is for my Advance English class so my lecturer will be expecting my language and grammar skills to be at a certain caliber.
Also, this paper is specifically for THE BAHAMAS so please use information that relates to The Bahamas.
I would also like for you to periodically send me parts so I can post them for a grade.
