Team Presentation – Mechanisms of Oppression & Becoming an Ally – This assignment expands students’ awareness of how social-political-cultural-historical contexts shape/influence contemporary issues (current events). – this means you will use what we’ve learned in class in the aforementioned contexts and apply it to your subject matter. This assignment gives you a chance to consider the history of isms in our society, the current state and lasting impact on communities. You get to take what you’ve learned a step further and apply it to your discussions on the assigned topic.
Integrating real life events with course content expands students’ knowledge of and ability to work effectively with a wide range of members of oppressed populations. It also helps them become agents of change against oppressive forces at work in society. – The project tasks you with identifying an incident of the type of ism you have been assigned. You are also tasked with identifying an agency that serves the targeted population. Due to COVID19 you may not have been able to contact anyone at the agency you targeted. However, you can locate an occurrence of the issue you were assigned via an internet search.
Students will be placed in groups (based on areas of oppression) of 5 or more depending on class size. Each group will be responsible for presenting a 5 to 10 minute presentation of their assigned topic and on a current event (i.e. campus, local, state, national, international news story) related to their area of oppression. Students must also identify an organization that works around issues related to this form of oppression and interview a professional who works there. At a minimum students should be able to discuss when and why the agency was founded, mission and goals, staff composition, are social workers employed at the agency and in what capacity. If not, how could hiring a social worker benefit the organization? The assignment must be presented thru creative presentation medium (i.e. photo essay, eportfolio, prezi, imovie, etc.) additional visual aids, You tube and/or videos are acceptable and encouraged. This activity not only assists students with deconstructing a current event, but also helps in developing skills in presenting. The purpose of your visual presentation is to do just what is stated in the sentence before this. It just allows you to deconstruct (discuss, explain, help us to understand) your findings. You do not have to do a visual presentation, however you should be well prepared to discuss your assigned topic. You all will rate your peers.
The groups lecture will be assessed using both peer and instructor review. Students should provide a summary of the current event (what happened?), why the event is significant, how it relates to their area of oppression, the event’s implications to social work practice (how should this inform social work research and practice). (Objectives A, B, C, D, E, & F) Summary should be no less than a page and a half. – Each group (not an individual member) has to present ONE paper via Sakai. You paper should be at least one and a half pages.
Assignment will be graded as follows: 40 points for presentation, 40 points for written summary, 20 points peer review.
