Six Decision Stages in Chapter 5

Assignment Guidelines

Students will select one of the three Harvard Business Review cases to analyze using the six stages of the managerial decision making model in Chapter 5 of the textbook. Students will take a holistic approach of evaluating a management or organizational problem. Students will be required to use the textbook and (5) external sources to support their analysis of the case. External sources should include current business periodicals, magazines, and peer-reviewed scholarly articles. Note: Wikipedia is not considered a scholarly source and cannot be used in the assignment.

I. Identify and Diagnose the Problem

Develop a diagram or flow chart to graphically illustrate the problem
Identify all of the stakeholders this problem impacts

II. Generate Alternative Solutions (3) or more

Consider ready-made solutions or innovative solutions
Identify 3 possible alternatives to address the problem
Conduct research on other companies and the alternatives they implemented to address the problem.
Consider the content discussed in Chapter 15-Innovating and Changing
Week #5:

III. Evaluate the Alternatives

Identify and state if the alternative has an impact on operational, personnel, and physical plant costs
Identify and state the impact of the alternative on the organizational structure, organizational culture, morale, and other areas.
State other departments needed to be brought in to evaluate the alternatives
Consider content in Chapter 7 – Organizing for Success
IV. Make a Choice

Select a choice and give a rational for selecting this choice
State why this is a good choice and its impact on all stakeholders
State what are the costs associated with implementing this choice
State how this decision will improve the company’s financial performance, corporate culture, or morale
Consider content in Chapter 5 – Planning and Decision Making
Week #6:

V. How to Implement the Decision

Identify the manager or individual or department to implement the decision
Provide a detailed account of how the decision will be implemented
State how the decision will be communicated through the organization using tips from Chapter 13 – Communication
State how will you deal with resistance to change
Consider content in Chapter 10 – Leadership and Chapter 11 – Motivating People
VI. Evaluate the Decision

State who will be responsible for evaluating the decision
State what data will be collected to evaluate the decision
Provide an illustration of how the decision will be examined through the control process in Exhibit 14.4 I Chapter 14-Managerial Control
State how the decision will be evaluated and monitored; for example performance appraisals, quarterly reports, written reports, personal observations, monthly progress meetings
Consider content in Chapter 14 – Managerial Control
Compile all stages I-VI into one final report and make any necessary revisions cited by the instructor during weeks 3 and 5.
