A spin is a heavily biased portrayal of information. Spinning an event or statement involves turning its obvious or apparent meaning into something else–a meaning that is more favorable to the spinner’s cause or position. Anyone can spin situations to his/her advantage by making an argument that changes the meaning of an event or statement.
For this assignment, you will complete two spins.
Spin#1: Imagine that you work for a political campaign and that you hope to protect your candidates (please give the candidate a name) character above all else—above honesty, the public good, democratic principles. It’s been discovered that your candidate accepts funds from a racist organization. Write a passage that would spin public attention away from the issue. Use as much subtlety as possible.
Spin #2:
Within the past few months, the coronavirus (COVID19) has spread from China to the United States. According to CNN, as of May 15th, the United States has 1,442,824 cases of people who have been diagnosed with the coronavirus. There have been 87,530 deaths (Hernandez, et al.).
Called a ‘pandemic’, schools, libraries, malls, gyms, stores, and other facilities have shut down. In most cases, grocery stores have ‘limited’ supplies of various food and common household items. Because of the shutdown, many people are without work, thus resulting in no income.
The stock market is plummeting, travel is at a minimum, and images of stores with empty shelves are posted on the news and other media outlets. Additionally, people have been brawling over items such as toilet paper and paper towels. Persons who do not have masks are or not wearing them are also being ridiculed and, in some cases, attacked. People who are of Asian descent are being ostracized and beaten in the United States. Another ethnic group, African-Americans are rumored to be the main carrier of the virus. President Trump has called the coronavirus a ‘Chinese virus’. Nevertheless, he has designated you, one of his esteemed staff and spokespersons, to turn peoples’ minds away from the chaos.
As a valued representative of the White House, it is pertinent that you make President Trump ‘shine’ in the most positive light. Please know that this will be televised.
