Resiliency is a complex concept that is much more than just surviving or getting through a bad experience. Discuss the meaning of resiliency as it relates to individuals, families, and groups.
Identify and discuss one specific social problem experienced by individuals, families, or groups that requires some degree of resilience to overcome (i.e., foster care, homelessness, divorce).
Identify and discuss one theory that you have learned about. Explore whether or not the theory can be used with individuals, families, and/or groups.
Using the theory you identified above, explain how that theory can be used to understand and promote resiliency associated with the social problem you identified.

This is what my discussion was based on; the paper can be expanded on Sam’s situation. This is very brief (just an idea)
What does it mean to be resilient?
Create a brief fictional case study of a family, individual, or group that further illustrates what it means to be resilient.
Explain how a multilevel systemic view is necessary to fully recognize the degree of resiliency the family, individual, or group possessed in your fictional case study. (I didn’t speak enough on Multilevel systemic view so I had points removed) 🙁

If we mention the word resilience in front of people they tend to define it as a way of “bouncing back”, I’ve heard people say that kids are resilient because they are so young and have a lot to live and learn so being resilient may be normal for them. One may say it defined as growth. Adapting to change is also another way to define resilience, it has been defined in sports, commercials for face creams and a host of other meanings depending on the topic. For human services it can be defined as the ability to withstand and rebound from serious life challenges (Walsh, 2016). My personal definition from experience is to recover from difficult situations with a lesson learned as well.

Sam was only 8 years old when he found himself being a father to his brother and sister. His mom had a drug addiction, and at times she attempted to be a parent but her addiction overpowered her need to parent. Sam’s mom disappeared overnight and Sam got nervous so he called a friend, in turn the friends mom call Child Protective Services. Sam and his siblings were in Foster Care overnight. Upon the court’s determination Sam would go live with his godfather and his other two siblings with their biological father.

Sam appeared to be a happy child thriving, going to school, and socializing with his friends. His godfather was a great provider and showed love and understanding for Sam considering he had been through so much. From an outsider looking in Sam was being spoiled, overcompensation for the situation he was in and the years of unintentional abuse. I say unintentional because I have not met a mother who would not do their best for their children if they were able. Unfortunately, Sam’s mom was an addict.

One Saturday morning the police showed up at Sam’s godfathers’ door. Sam panicked because he has had his share of unhappiness and for him the police meant they were going to take him away, again. Sam’s godfather was arrested, and this time Sam’s grandmother was waiting for him when he walked outside. No one at the time knew what happened. Sam’s godfather appeared in court and was charged with sexual abuse of a minor, not just one minor but several children in the neighborhood. Someone finally spoke up, upon learning his charges and investigations being had they learned that Sam was abused as well.

As a result, Sam went to therapy, a child psychologist and the family went to a family therapist. Sam seemed to have been doing fine again under his circumstances, he continued to play, learn, and thrive despite his tragedy. He was surrounded by love. Sam grew to be a very well-mannered adult who paid it forward by being a voice for others. He also became a husband and a foster parent to his tow nephews and one niece because his sister shared the same addiction as his mother.

Sam found purpose and decided to do good instead of turning his situation into what could have been a horrible outcome. Sam was more then resilient, he was proactive, he managed his feelings, and remained aware of what he was dealing with. His life was full of challenges, and thought the process was not easy he learned how to deal with it all. He became an advocate and helped his own family avoid the struggles and pain that he knows they could have gone through had he not adopted them.

The multilevel systemic view is necessary because it “considers the active, ongoing interplay in family transactional processes as members navigate and negotiate their relationship with their social environment” (Walsh, 2016, p.12). When reviewing Sams’ situation he went through all the cycles provided to him so he wouldn’t become a victim to his childhood. Sam was able to beat the odds!
