Minimum number of citations to appear on Works Cited page: six, as follows:

At least two books cited, at least two articles cited, and at least two electronic sources cited. Note that if your articles are taken from electronic sources such as a library database listing (the best source) the citation counts as either an article or an electronic source. This means that if you get four articles from electronic sources, you have all you need. If you use a quote from your primary source (the novel you are talking about (-and probably you would!) and you document that, you need only something from another book to make up the required two citations.

How to Organize your paper

The paper needs to be six pages long, but it might be easier to think about it as two, three-page papers. Remember your high school book report? You probably did a couple of these where you explain the book you read as if the reader of your paper has no idea at all about the book you are talking about. You have to explain what it is, what kind of book, where, who and what is going on, plus comments about the book overall. This is what you do in the first half of your paper (the first three pages or so). In other words, for half of your research paper you are concerned with EXPLANATION of the book. Tell us about it! We know nothing whatsoever! Remember your five terms for comment on short stories? Use the same tool to discuss the novel, but avoid writing a mere plot summary; that we do not need. It’s ok to say something about the plot, sure, but do not dwell on plot only.

NEXT, for the second half (or so) of the paper, you are concerned with EVALUATION of the book. Here you are discussing your opinions about the book as they have come to be shaped as a result of your research into what others have had to say about the same book—or the same author—o the same type of book, etc. In other words, while you have had an opportunity to review the work of others on this book, you put forward your own opinions, which may agree in some places with those of other, or may in fact disagree with others. Here you are clear and specific, using the quotes or summaries or paraphrases of your sources (and citing them) as you show how YOU interpret the book or how YOU feel about the author, etc. Do not give us author biographies or other irrelevant material here-simply build your argument for your own opinion of this book. Was it great? Was it only so-so? Was it terrible? Explain where and what makes you form this opinion, and how it agrees or disagrees with opinions of others. It may well be then that your paper’s thesis statement comes early in the second half of the paper, where you clearly state what that opinion is and then go on to show how it is you come to this conclusion.
