Please review the guidelines below to complete your service learning paper.
Reflect on your experiences through the lens of “democratic practice.” “Are students at the schools being prepared to be active and successful participants in a democracy?” In order to answer this question, you will have to engage in critical thinking. This means that you will be making your judgments based on criteria or standards that you will choose to write about. You will include evidence for your judgments in the form of examples that you collect during your observations, community service and attendance at the board meetings. You will also make suggestions on how to make the school and classrooms even more democratic than they already are. You should use the Portrait of a Teacher handout and any chapter readings, articles and videos to support your answers.
The Four Categories of Analysis for your paper include:
1. Room Set-up
2. School and Classroom Climate
a. Content being taught
b. Teaching strategies
c. Assessment of student learning
4. Integration of Family and Community
Sources for Collection of Data
You will have several sources where you will collect your data that include the following:
a. Observation of the classrooms
b. Attendance at two school-related meetings
c. Your service to the school community
In the paper, you will reflect on what you have seen and draw conclusions (using your text, the Portrait of a Teacher, handouts posted in Blackboard, your research on the web as well as your own background knowledge about the characteristics of a democracy)
(Please see Data Collection Guiding Questions posted in Blackboard
