Introduction (10 points): In order to receive full credit for the introduction the speaker must attempt to gain the audiences’ attention, establish credibility and goodwill, reveal the nature of the topic, and prepare the audience for the rest of the speech. Examples of gaining attention are personal stories, quotes, startling statistics, etc. Next, the speaker must establish credibility in that they must reveal to the audience why they are knowledgeable to speak on the topic chosen. Revealing the nature of the topic includes expressing the central idea. Finally, you must prepare the audience for the rest of the speech (forecasting). Tell them briefly what you will be talking about. Body (20 points): The body of your speech includes several components. First, you must clearly identify the main points and develop each main point with appropriate, credible supporting material that is orally cited. The topic must be developed for the occasion and the audience. The ideas must be arranged in a logical fashion (i.e. chronologically, topically, spatially, etc.). Transitions are also important to move seamlessly from one idea to the next. Conclusion (10 points): The conclusion is evaluated according to whether or not the speaker prepared the audience for the end (i.e. In conclusion….) and whether the speaker reviewed the main points, reinforced the central ideas, and provided closure (“The End” or “That’s it” is not appropriate).
Oral Evaluation (15 points): Credit for the delivery of the speech rests on several items. First, it must be delivered extemporaneously. You may use speaking notes .Use them sparingly and only include key elements of the speech. Gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact are all important to the delivery. Try to avoid nervous gestures such as shifting weight, swaying, pacing, etc. Verbally, words should be pronounced correctly and speakers should refrain from using jargon that is unfamiliar to the audience. The speaker’s voice should be loud enough for everyone to hear and should include vocal variety. Finally, the speech should be delivered in the allotted time (3 ½ -4 minutes).
Visual Aids (15 points): Students are required to include at least one visual aid to accompany the speech presentation. The visual must be pertinent to the speech and must not distract the audience from the presentation. Miscellaneous (15 points): This includes dressing appropriately, being organized, being prepared, speaking within the allotted time, etc.
