UBST 253 Calgary ProjectYour last project for this course involves applying the readings and llectures to the analysis of an aspect of Calgary. Our lecture topics and readings have focused on the broad principles of urban development, social interaction, planning, governance, and design. This project is an opportunity for you to bring these themes, concepts, and ideas to bear on Calgary. While some of the approved projects listed below involve research you do in the library or at home, others involve leaving your house and going out into the city. If you do choose a project that involves field work please be aware that you are not, under any circumstances, permitted to question, interview, or otherwise interact with members of the public as a means of gathering information for your project. Any direct interaction with the public must first be approved by a university research ethics committee, and we do not have that clearance. You may, of course, interact with the public in a manner that does not differ from your normal everyday interactions. If you conduct field work in enclosed spaces, you must wear a mask. Whenever taking photographs that include people, be respectful and discrete, of course.Your final report should be a typed, double-spaced analysis of approximately 1000 words. You must draw upon at least six relevant course readings and include citations in your discussion and analysis. Additional material, e.g., maps, photographs, etc., will prove helpful; supplemental images need not be your own work, e.g., a map of your research area. This project should be uploaded to D2L (please use the designated dropbox) by 5pm December 9. There is no penalty for late submissions but there is an absolute cutoff for submissions at 5 pm December 15.
H. Sustainable Urban Development in CalgaryGo to the Sustainable Calgary website, www.sustainablecalgary.org, and download their most recent “State of the City” report. This document is the result of a citizen-led participatory process. This process was designed to facilitate citizens taking an active role in shaping the future of the city, both in identifying issues and offering solutions. Itgives the status of more than three dozen indicators that have been associated with various forms of urban sustainability. Pick an indicator with a poor rating and analyze it with respect to discussions we have had in class or with relation to any of the readings. For example, what is the trend in urban transportation? How is Calgary doing compared to what is thought to be sustainable? Has anything changed since the report was written? What is your opinion of the direction of the City with regard to this indicator? Do you think Calgary is on a path to a sustainable future
