You will be expected to integrate the materials covered in class (outlined in the powerpoints and in the textbook) into your responses. Outside materials may also be used. Make sure all materials used are properly cited.

1) a) First, identify and describe four (4) agents of socialization (e.g., the media, religion, family, peers, schools, etc.) that influence ideas related to gender roles in our society. (Two paragraph minimum.)

b) Second, choose two (2) of the options below, and describe in your own words how each of the two areas chosen contribute to (or reflect aspects of) gender inequality in our society today. You must include an examination of the hard data for each of the two areas chosen. (Two paragraph minimum in total.) i.) Attitudinal research on traditional gender roles in the family, pictured below:

Figure 4.2 Change in Acceptance of Traditional Gender Roles in the Family, 1977–2010 percentage agreeing that “it is much better for everyone involved if the man is the achiever outside the home and the woman takes care of the home and family.”

ii.) Recent statistics on women’s unpaid labor across the globe (see PDF on blackboard under gender tab) iii.) The gender pay gap iv.) The pink tax v.) Gendered employment (i.e., areas of employment where men and women are concentrated in jobs that coincide with early socializations of what is “appropriate” employment for men and women) vi.) Sexual assault statistics

2) Choose three (4) specific issue areas from the ‘choose an issue’ section of the Movement Advancement Project’s page (http://www.lgbtmap.org/equality-maps) that we explored in class. Feel free to choose four specific areas within an issue area, for example, under Nondiscrimination laws you can choose from the tabs related to housing, employment, credit, public accommodations, etc., OR you can choose issue areas across various tabs, including areas we did not discuss in class (so you can examine housing, youth bullying, name change on identity documents, and employment, as an example).

After you have chosen your four areas, answer the following questions: (One paragraph minimum for EACH issue area – FOUR paragraphs in total)

• What are the potential consequences of the absence of laws to protect against discrimination in the area you chose to examine? Use specific examples linked to the issue area of choice and avoid writing in generalities. Do not simply list what the law protects against as stated in the area’s description. • How will the issue area you chose have an impact on financial stability throughout the course of one’s life? Think about how these areas are interconnected – education is linked to employment, and housing, and health care, for example. Do not just mention that one will not be financially stable, explain why.

3) Have a look at the charts on the digital divide discussed in class (4 charts in total), and answer the following questions:
a) First, define the digital divide in your own words. In other words, in what ways have technological advancements created divisions in our society? (1-2 sentences.)
b) Examine the four graphs presented below and explain the patterns amongst teens and adults as it pertains to the digital divide. Make sure to include an explanation of the digital divide on the basis of urbanity (i.e., urban, suburban, rural), income levels, educational attainment, and age. (One paragraph minimum.)
c) What do the patterns you observe related to age, income, educational attainment, and region mean in terms of access to information, whether about employment, housing, education, consumer goods, and any other area of life that depends on having access to the internet (especially high-speed internet) at home? Think about all that is done online and how not having access to a computer or high-speed internet will impact your life. Use specific examples. (Two paragraph minimum.)

4) a) In the beginning of the economy & work unit, we examined excerpts from the novel The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. First, explain what was unearthed from Sinclair’s examination of the meatpacking industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Use specific examples that reflect both the conditions for the worker and the environment in which the meat was made and packaged. (One paragraph minimum.)

b) Today, the pork industry (and soon the beef industry) will be moving toward a model of self-regulation, where identifying diseased and contaminated meat will be less in the hands of the USDA veterinarians trained to identify contagious diseases in animals and more in the hands of industry workers. Explain the potential concerns for shifting oversight from the government to the meatpacking industry and the parties that will benefit from this shift. (One paragraph minimum.)

• Finally, take a look at this Washington Post article listing the specific rules and regulations cancelled by the Trump administration in his first year in office by copypasting the following link into your browser (you can also find the regulations listed in a PDF on blackboard under the powerpoint tab): https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/politics/trump-rolling-back-obama-rules/ Choose three (3) policy areas you wish to explore. Within each of the three (3) policy areas, choose one (1) rule/regulation that has been cancelled (or in the process of cancellation) and organize them in a list, answering questions (i) and (ii) under each rule/regulation: i.) What group(s)/entities will be positively impacted by each rule cancellation? Why? Please do not simply list these groups/entities and make sure to use ample detail. ii.) What group(s)/entities will be negatively impacted by each rule cancellation? Why? Please do not simply list these groups/entities and make sure to use ample detail. Finally, reflect on the three choices you examined together. What do you think the overall impact will be on society as a whole?
