The Hours, by Michael Cunningham
The theme of this course is “Running Up That Hill”, and we have tried to look at a variety of literary forms with that idea in mind: fable, fairy tale, short story, poetry, drama, and creative non-fiction.
The final form we are reading is the novel, and in Michael Cunningham’s The Hours, each characters’ interior life has a major role in how their story progresses, or how the novel is formed. Each of the women is acutely conscious of her inner self or soul, slightly separate from the “self” seen by other people.
In this paper I would like you to explore the inner life of one, or all of the female characters, choosing from one of the following questions. For whatever question you decide to work on—it is imperative that you choose appropriate lines/quotes from the novel, give context for each character, and have concrete analysis.
1. The research that will be done for this paper will revolve around the circumstances of the women and the time frame they live in: Mrs. Woolf—depression & post WWI aftermath, for example.
2. Each woman at times sees herself as a failure. Why is this so, and how do you see this emotion manifested on the characters around them—how are others affected by this interior feeling of failure?
What does the possibility of death represent to the various characters? What makes some of the characters decide to die, yet others to live?
