Reflection paper assignment guidelines
An argumentative essay where you reflect on the topic you have been exploring for the course
Your essay must be based on
at least THREE academic/scholarly sources, inc. journal articles, books, or book chapters (written in English) that you have found BEYOND required course readings [you should be in good shape based on what you have discovered in the annotated bibliography exercise];
As well as any additional secondary or primary sources you have used, including those from course readings;
Inclusion of primary source material in your essay is OPTIONAL, NOT REQUIRED
Sources must be cited in footnotes and listed in a bibliography according to Chicago style
For information and resources on issues of citation, see Purdue’s OWL website: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.html
Essay specifications: 5-7 pages (5 full pages minimum), double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, 1-inch margins, submitted as WORD document on Moodle
Deadline: Wednesday, 18 November 2020, class time
What should your essay look like?
There should be a statement or thesis that answers a question
E.g. Question: How did Neo-Confucianism in the Song dynasty in China relate to the civil examination system that developed at the same time? Statement/thesis: Although the subject of the examinations and some of the aims of the examination system were shared by the Neo-Confucian thinkers, they were also critical about the kind of qualities that the examination tested for and the effects the examinations had on learning and moral life.
There should be a basic, logical structure of an essay:
Introduction, including thesis statement
Develop your argument to support your thesis statement and answer the underlying question
Address aspects of the topic that are highly relevant for your question and thesis
Link these various aspects of the topic in a logical manner
Examine relevant arguments, positions, and issues you have come across in your sources
Use topic sentences
Start (and perhaps end) your paragraph stating what the paragraph shows
Summarize the main points of your discussion in the body paragraphs
Conclusion: Show how your discussion in the body paragraphs supports your thesis
Why is your conclusion significance? What relevance or implications does it have for our broader understanding of East Asia and for human history more generally?
There should be footnotes providing citation of the sources you are relying on for your evidence and arguments. Footnotes should be in Chicago style. A good rule of thumb is that every body paragraph should be supported by at least one footnote, usually at the end of the paragraph. In any case, every time you refer to a source for information, evidence, or an argument, you should cite the source. Do not include information, evidence, or someone else’s idea in your essay unless you cite it in a footnote.
There should be a bibliography at the end of the essay, after the conclusion. (This is not an annotated bibliography because you are just listing the sources without including notes or commentary on each item as you did with the annotated bibliography.) This bibliography should include all the sources you have cited in the footnotes as well as other sources you may have found and examined in your research but did not include in your discussion. The bibliography should be organized according to Chicago style. The bibliography DOES NOT count toward your total page count.
