As we did with Essay #1, we will practice writing a thesis statement for Essay #2. As a reminder, here are my guidelines for thesis statements: Chapter 31 in our textbook has information on thesis statements (see especially p. 1920-1922), but basically a thesis tells exactly what you will argue in the paper. It needs to be argumentative, which means it makes a point it’s possible to disagree with. You are probably going to find disagreements unconvincing because you believe in your own thesis statement, but it still needs to be possible to make a counterargument. Also, don’t worry about “giving everything away” in your thesis statement — this is what you are supposed to do! Be as specific as you can in one or two sentences at most about what you plan on arguing in your essay.
For this assignment, first, write a possible thesis statement for Essay #2. You are not required to use this thesis in your actual essay, but you are welcome to if you are happy with it. Make sure to label your thesis clearly, so I know exactly which sentence (or two) you want to be the thesis.
Then, write a short paragraph (100+ words) discussing the thesis — what do you like about it, what do you not like about it, what concerns or questions do you have?
I will grade your exercise based on 1. The presence of an argumentative thesis, 2. The quality of the thesis statement (does it make a convincing point?), 3. The presence of a 100+ word paragraph discussing the thesis, 4. The quality of the paragraph’s discussion (does it address the questions above in a clear, logical way?)
